Limani bar, Kassiopi, Corfu.
Limani Bar
I’ve been visiting the Limani bar, Kassiopi Corfu for a couple of years now.
It’s picturesque setting overlooking the bay is probably one of the most enviable locations in Corfu.
I was asked to pop along by the owner and good friend of mine Kostas Sarakinos while I was visiting kassiopi a few weeks ago.
Kassiopi as you may know, especially if you are a frequent visitor to my food and travel page ‘Recipes from my travels’ & my business directory, is a place I hold closest to my heart.
‘Limani Bar’ lies beneath the oldest Byzantine fort in Corfu to which has a wealth of history and mythology attached to it….
Some of the worlds most notable figures have frequented Kassiopi over the years and none more so than ‘Princess Margaret’ whose evening visits to “Limani Bar” in the early 80s became a regular occurrence, sipping her favourite whiskey while watching the sunset over the harbour.
On my visit I was accompanied by the equally beautiful Lois, who is a massive foodie herself and if I was biased towards my friendship with the owners, she would surely give an honest opinion of the food.
To be fair, their was never even a doubt…the food, hospitality and company was as equally as stunning.
We both shared shared the ‘Corfiot Salad’ which included fresh salad, tomatoes, graviera cheese from Corfu and a beautiful dressing using flavours from the kumquat fruit.
The delicate spiced ‘Nouboulo’ was a perfect accompaniment for the sweet salad and everything matched just perfectly.
My friend Lois, chose the “The Lamb” no need for fancy names, especially when you have top quality ingredients cooked for you.
This diced lamb stew must have been slow cooked in Marsala wine, rosemary and garlic all day as I was told it was beautifully tender and flavoursome.
Served with a baba ghanoush purée and pitta breads, it was thoroughly delicious.
I spotted the “Pancetta” on the menu and was curious how this dish could be elevated…. I mean pancetta was usually thinly sliced meat originating from Italy (Venetian cuisine is a big influence on Corfiot cuisine) or if you are from the United Kingdom, little lardons of smoked bacon…..
So when I was served ‘bite size chunks’ of slow cooked marinated belly pork with crunchy sage and one of the smoothest potato purée’s I’ve every had the pleasure of tasting, I was delighted.
An Apple chutney to accompany the rich belly pork was beautifully sweet.
The taste from the “Pancetta” was outstanding and truly a go to dish if you want a bit of Comfort food.
We both finished with the refreshingly delightful Mango sorbet, which had a little biscuit perched on top for crunch and a equally nice touch.
Along with a refreshing non-alcoholic Strawberry & Mint cocktail being served throughout our meal, we both agreed as we wondered back through the harbour that this meal was something truly special.
